Buying a German car inside the EU

Germany is in the single market, so a car going to another EU country never touches a customs procedure. That makes it the simplest thing we do — and it is why we keep it separate from our export markets.

What is different inside the EU

No customs procedure

No export declaration, no ATLAS filing, no proof of exit, no clearance at the far end. Goods move freely inside the single market, so the car is simply driven or trucked to you. German Customs applies the export procedure only to destinations outside the EU.

VAT follows one clear rule

A car counts as new for VAT if it has done no more than 6,000 km or was supplied within 6 months of its first registration. On a new car you pay VAT only in the country where you register it. A used car — over 6,000 km and over 6 months — is handled differently, and dealers may apply a margin scheme, so we set out the exact treatment for your car in writing before anything is signed.

Registration stays national

There are no common EU rules on registering a vehicle: the documents and the deadline are set by each country. We supply the full German file — registration certificate parts I and II, the sale contract, the invoice and the Certificate of Conformity where the manufacturer issues one — and you confirm the local steps with your own registration office.

Why Ireland, Cyprus and Malta are not on the list

They are the three EU member states that drive on the left, and every car we buy in Germany is left-hand drive. We would rather say so than sell you something awkward to live with. It is the same reason we do not ship to the United Kingdom, Kenya, Tanzania or South Africa.
